 Trash to Treasure

The Upcycled Project seeks to transform the waste management landscape in India by pioneering a holistic approach that focuses on community-oriented and innovative solutions for dealing with waste materials. Through centering on public-private partnerships, the project aims to encourage proper waste disposal and collection at the community level by generating awareness and responsibility surrounding waste management in peri-urban India.

Background

The Urgency of Waste Management

  • Global Crisis: 2.01 billion tonnes of solid waste generated annually worldwide.

  • Individual Impact: Each person contributes 0.74 kilograms of waste daily.

  • Future Projection: Estimated 3.40 billion tonnes of waste annually by 2050.

Challenges in India

A Closer Look

  • Improper Disposal: Littering, dumping, burning, and unregulated landfills are rampant.

  • Ecological Impact: Soil and air pollution harm habitats and ecosystems.

  • Public Health Concerns: Exposure to toxic chemicals and the spread of diseases.

  • Resource Loss: Valuable resources lost, leading to an unsustainable economy.

  • Community Vulnerability: Underprivileged communities near disposal sites most affected.

  • Marine Life Impact: Improper disposal leads to plastic waste in oceans, harming sea creatures and worsening global warming effects.
